Caitlin's House on Beach Road
Once an unloved rental house suffering from years of neglect, this renovated stunner with its bright-white vaulted ceilings and fresh contemporary style will knock your socks off.
Striking and serene, this beach-side gem’s neutral palette is complimented by warm timbers, lush textures and pops of greenery. The unique and thoughtful design is all thanks to owner Caitlin’s keen eye for interior style as well as the odd Gumtree bargain.
A beautiful forever home, cherished by the family that live, sleep and play within its walls; this month’s House Perv is a celebration of stylish family living with a coastal-modern edge.

Please tell us a little about you, your family and who is currently living at the home.
C: I’m Caitlin, the face behind @thehouseonbeachroad and I live here with my husband Jon and our three children, Olivia, aged six, Ellis, aged three and Harriette, aged one.
Now onto your home, can you tell us its story?
C: We purchased the house two and half years ago. It was a ‘run-down renovator’ but we could see the potential in the bones of the house and we absolutely loved the area.
When we purchased it, you could clearly see the previous owner’s additions – it was so mismatched – and 20 years of being a rental property had taken its toll.
We moved in with our (then) two children and firstly made it liveable, with a fresh coat of paint in the bedrooms and new carpet. We have been renovating in stages ever since.
It is still a major work in progress with the three bathrooms, exterior and yards to be completed, but we are in no hurry.
Do you have any specific stories to tell about this renovation project – any wins and fails?
C: Renovating with a young family always has its challenges but our biggest win would be finding half of our kitchen on Gumtree for $500!
We ended up adding extra pantry space and a large kitchen island (much later when we could afford it), but it was the foundation of what we have now and it has helped to shape the design of the space.
I love how bright and airy the space is and it is truly the heart of our home.
You have some beautiful pieces of furniture, art and homewares. What or who are your key style inspirations?
C: I mainly gravitate towards neutral tones and pieces that are rich in texture. I also love a good pop of greenery. Avenue Twenty Two always inspire me with their gorgeous designs, but there are so many talented designers and stylists out there that I’m never short of inspiration.
How you would describe your interior style?
C: Our home is a fusion of my love of neutrals paired with my husband’s desire to live in a minimalist environment (that won’t be happening anytime soon!).
I guess you could describe the home as having a relaxed coastal style. I am always conscious that it is a family home first and foremost, so the design has to not only look good but also be functional.
I have many hidey holes to stash the kids toys in to keep them out of sight!
What do you love most about living in your house – your favourite room or favourite piece of furniture?
C: My favourite room is our kitchen/living room. The vaulted ceilings are what I fell in love with when we first saw the house. Although the room was painted peach and full of dark stained timber, I envisioned it being white, light and airy and that is what we have today.
Our large kitchen island is where we enjoy casual meals and it is where guests gravitate toward.
With three young children, the kitchen is where I spend most of my days. Having the living room right beside us makes it the perfect space for a young family.
Can you tell us about the location and what do you enjoy most?
C: We live in the suburb of Redhead. We have the most beautiful beach on our door step which has a great community vibe. With local gems like Sea Maiden coffee and Villa Lane Homewares, we love starting the day with a delicious coffee then heading to the beach.
Is it your forever home?
C: This house is our forever home. We still have a lot to do and it is a massive work in progress but we are slowly working through it. Being our forever home, we are conscious of every space we renovate, making sure it is exactly how we want it.
What three words best describe your home?
C: Airy, relaxing and family-friendly.
